Robert B. Nussenblatt, M.D., MPH

Robert B. Nussenblatt, M.D., MPH is the chief of the Laboratory of Immunology at the National Eye Institute (NEI), National Institutes of Health (NIH). In addition to his position at NEI, Dr. Nussenblatt is the acting scientific and clinical director of the National Cancer for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), NIH. Robert earned his B.S. in Biology at City College of New York in 1968. In 1972, Dr. Nussenblatt obtained his M.D. at SUNY, Downstate Medical Center, College of Medicine. Following medical school, he completed his residency in internal medicine at Bellevue Hospital in New York, NY. In 1977, Dr. Nussenblatt completed his ophthalmology residency at NYU Medical Center and became an NEI employee. Continuing his academic career, Dr. Nussenblatt completed his immunology fellowship at the NIH. In 2007, he obtained his MPH with an emphasis on Epidemiology and Clinical Trials from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Dr. Nussenblatt is a world-class ocular immunologist and expert in clinical research design and conduct. He established a section on Ocular Immunology that later became the Laboratory of Immunology at the NEI. He has served as clinical director and scientific director for the NEI. In addition, Dr. Nussenblatt has directed the clinical fellowship program for ophthalmologists for over 20 years. Currently, he is a senior advisor to the deputy director of Intramural Research and the co-chair for the oversight committee for the National Electronic Clinical Trial and Research Network at the NIH.

Dr. Nussenblatt has a sincere research interest in immunology and the eye. His goal is to unlock the mechanisms of uveitis and apply what he learns in the laboratory to treat patients with a blinding disease. As chief of the Laboratory of Immunology Dr. Nussenblatt and his laboratory team are very interested in ocular inflammatory disease, specifically uveitis.
