2003 NEI Summer Student Experiences
My name is Casey Milch and I’m a rising senior in high school at Bishop O’Connell in Arlington, Virginia. This summer, I interned at the National Eye Institute at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. I worked in the pathology lab with Mary Alice Crawford, Joe Hackett, and Iris Wise all supervised by Dr. Chi-Chao Chan.
I performed many duties as a summer student in the lab. I stained and cover slipped slides in both methacrylate and paraffin formats, washed laboratory materials necessary for use with the slides, and put the slides through the necessary courses of alcohols and methacrylates.
I feel that this was a priceless opportunity as I gained much knowledge from working with such a kaleidoscope of people. From world-renowned physicians to young medical students and many in between, I feel that I’ve gained experience about the health profession and all that it entails through these individuals. My seventy-five minute commute from my home in Northern Virginia to NIH on the Metro feels like it was definitely worthwhile and I look forward to hopefully returning to NIH next summer.
