The role of RPE65 in maintaining the sensitivity of the retina to light.
1) The normal retina with active RPE65 makes functional visual pigment (e.g., rhodopsin) and is sensitive to light, and so can see.
2) The LCA2 retina without active RPE65 cannot make or restore the inactive opsins to functional visual pigment and is not light-sensitive, and so is blind.
