Current Projects

Dr. Ferris is actively involved in the Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Network (, through which researchers at clinics around the country collaborate to conduct research of diabetic eye disease. He is also involved in the Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS 2), which is evaluating supplements containing plant- and fish-derived nutrients for preventing advanced age-related macular degeneration.


Dr. Ferris is the author of more than 200 research articles in peer-reviewed journals, including American Journal of Ophthalmology, Archives of Ophthalmology, Journal of the American Medical Association, Lancet, and the New England Journal of Medicine.

The National Eye Institute (NEI), part of the National Institutes of Health, leads the federal government's research on the visual system and eye diseases. NEI supports basic and clinical science programs that result in the development of sight-saving treatments.
