All my adult life, I've been diligent about getting my annual eye exam. Although I have no family history of eye disease, my most recent check-up with a new doctor led to a life-changing experience.
Within the eyes are canals that allow fluids to drain from the eyes. The new doctor determined that the canals in both of my eyes were narrow, which is called anatomically narrow angles. If the fluid doesn't drain properly, the pressure in the eye builds. If the condition is left undetected and untreated, glaucoma will develop and almost certainly lead to blindness. I had no symptoms!
To correct the condition, I had laser surgery on both eyes. The physician used numbing agents on the surface of my eyes and performed the surgery in his office. The procedure opens the canals, which allows the fluid to drain more effectively.
I am grateful for the experience. I tell my family and friends to make sure they have their glaucoma screenings done during annual eye exams.
