Health Scientist Administrator/Program Officer

The mission of the National Eye Institute (NEI) is to eliminate vision loss and improve quality of life through vision research. NEI is seeking an exceptional candidate for a Program Officer position in the Division of Extramural Science Programs (DESP). The division supports a broad range of basic, translational, and clinical research as well as career development programs in vision science.

Major Duties: The successful candidate will have primary responsibility for developing, directing, and managing a portfolio of grants and/or cooperative agreements in basic vision biology and/or neuroscience that spans multiple areas of interest and levels of analysis related to visual function. In addition to programmatic oversight of the portfolio, responsibilities include ongoing analysis to identify scientific gaps and opportunities, communicating with extramural investigators about NEI priorities and, in collaboration with program officers within NEI, NIH, and other funding agencies, developing new initiatives that address the highest priorities of the institute. The successful candidate will participate in DESP planning activities and the implementation of new policies, mechanisms, and approaches for research administration. This position involves extensive interaction with grantees, other researchers, and NIH staff.

Candidate Qualifications: Applicants must be U.S. citizens. It is preferred that candidates hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent) in biomedical research and have professional experience conducting vision research. Strong organizational, oral, written and communication skills are required. Experience with grant review and/or portfolio management is preferable but not required.
