On Monday, June 17, the Global Health Vision Lecture Series will feature Professor Rajvardhan Azad, director of Dr. R. P. Center for Ophthalmic Sciences, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, India, and president, Asia Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (Asia-ARVO). The title of his presentation will be “Diabetic Retinopathy: An Emerging Epidemic of Blindness in India and the Asia Pacific Region.” The lecture will be held at 12 p.m. in Building 31, Room 6C10 on the NIH campus.
In his lecture, Dr. Abel will describe possible areas for collaboration and apprise the audience of work being done at the Dr. R.P. Center for Ophthalmic Sciences in the field diabetic retinopathy. Currently, India tops the list in the number of diabetics with 31 million, and that number is predicted to increase 2.5 times by 2030. Dr. Azad and others have studied the role of newer anti-VEGF drugs in angiogenesis in a mouse model of retinopathy of prematurity.
Dr. Azad is director of Dr. R.P. Center, professor of ophthalmology, and head of the Vitreo-Retina & Ocular Trauma Unit. He is a fellow of the International College of Surgeons, Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, and National Academy of Medical Sciences. Dr. Azad is an international member of American Academy of Ophthalmology and a life member of about a dozen scientific committees and societies. He is a recipient of the Dr. B.C. Roy National Award for Eminent Medical Teacher in India. Dr. Azad was awarded for his outstanding contribution to ophthalmology by the Delhi Ophthalmological Society in 1990 and again in April 2000. He has served as secretary general of the National Society for Prevention of Blindness-India and president of the Vitreo-retinal Society of India and secretary general of the Ophthalmic Laser Society of India. He has also worked as technical advisor to the W.H.O. for South-East Asia at their regional meeting on blindness in Jakarta in February 2000. He is the current president of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, and Asia-ARVO.
The Global Health Vision Lecture Series is sponsored by the National Eye Institute (NEI) and the NIH Global Health Interest Group. The Fogarty International Center is also a sponsor of this and other previous and planned lectures. The series was created by the NEI Office of International Programs in 2012 to foster the global collaboration and exchange of information among international vision researchers and eye health clinical scientists. Lessons learned from global health programs around the world and their applications to healthcare research in the United States are a focus of discussion in these lectures.
