Barbara Silverstone is president and CEO of Lighthouse International, a leading vision rehabilitation organization with interna-tional research and educational programs as well as a major provider of vision rehabilitation services in the New York region. Dr. Silverstone is a noted author and lecturer on subjects related to aging, older people and their families and age-related vision loss. She received her master’s degree from the School of Social Service Administration of the University of Chicago and her doctorate from the Columbia University School of Social Work.
Among her publications are the books You and Your Aging Parent and Growing Older Together: A Couples Guide to Understanding and Coping with the Challenges of Later Life, both co-authored with Helen Kandel Hyman. Her texts include Social Work Practice with the Frail Elderly and Their Families, co-authored with Dr. Ann Burack-Weiss. She is a co-editor-in-chief of The Lighthouse Handbook on Vision Impairment and Vision Rehabilitation, published in 2000 by Oxford University Press.
Barbara Silverstone is past president of the Gerontological Society of America and also a member of the American Society on Aging and the National Association of Social Workers. Awards received by Dr. Silverstone include the 1986 Social Worker in Aging Distinguished Service Award from the New York City Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, the 1992 Walter M. Beattie Award for Distinguished Service in Aging presented by the New York State Society on Aging, and the 1997 American Society on Aging Award for recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of aging.
