BACKGROUND, PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVE:
The Building 49 Central Animal Facility houses approximately over 20,000 cages of rodents in support of the mission of six (6) ICs occupying the facility. VRMB requires additional rodent cages to replace damaged and cloudy cages. Cloudy cages can hinder the ability to perform proficient health observations to the animals, while cracked and damaged cages can jeopardize the integrity of the micro-environment inside of the cages. The integrity of the inside of the cages must be maintained to successfully support both the health of the animal and the all research efforts throughout the facility. Adequate amounts of animal cages are crucial for adhering to the established animal husbandry schedule. Following this schedule efficiently allows for the best animal care possible. Limited functional cages in circulation can delay the daily activities that are vital in supporting the research efforts throughout the facility. The performance and functionality of these caging units is critical to the protection of the animals and research supported by these systems.
