The National Eye Institute (NEI) has established an office to accelerate progress in regenerative medicine for eye disease and vision disorders. The NEI Office of Regenerative Medicine will facilitate collaboration among scientists across the National Institutes of Health (NIH), other federal agencies, and academic and nonprofit research institutions. NEI is a part of NIH.
Steven Becker, Ph.D., leads the new NEI Office of Regenerative Medicine.
"Innovations in cellular and molecular reprogramming are driving a wave of potential therapies for eye disease," said Steven Becker, Ph.D., director of the NEI Office of Regenerative Medicine. "The goal of our office is to help vision scientists ride this wave, steering research advances toward clinical application."
The NEI Office of Regenerative Medicine oversees the NEI Audacious Goals for Regenerative Medicine in Vision, the 3D Retina Organoid Challenge, and helps coordinate the Regenerative Medicine Innovation Project. Becker has served as NEI's administrative lead on regenerative medicine initiatives since 2014.
To promote and disseminate cutting-edge research of relevancy to the vision community, the NEI ORM is hosting the Vision Innovation Seminar Series. The first webinar in the series features Tea Soon Park, Ph.D., NEI Ocular and Stem Cell Translational Research Section, in a talk titled “Vascular Progenitor Cells Generated from Human Naïve Diabetic iPSC for Revascularization of Ischemic Retina.” The webinar takes place June 29, 2020, 2:00-3:00 ET.
