NIH Websites Are Changing

Beginning in late July, NIH will start introducing a new website experience designed to make it easier to find health information, research, funding opportunities, and other resources. During the transition, you may notice changes to navigation, page layouts, and where some information is located. Learn more in our Frequently Asked Questions.

Optic Nerve Regeneration: Uncovering Molecular Pathways

Jeffrey Goldberg

The NEI AGI Seminar Series in Neuroregeneration explores topics relevant to regenerative neuroscience and medicine, with special emphasis on the visual system.

Sept. 25, 2018

Jeffrey Goldberg, M.D., Ph.D., presented “Optic Nerve Regeneration: Uncovering Molecular Pathways,” Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018, on the NIH campus. His lecture was part of the NEI Audacious Goals Initiative (AGI) Seminar Series in Neuroregeneration. Goldberg is chairman of ophthalmology and director of the Byers Eye Institute at Stanford University. He leads a project funded by the National Eye Institute AGI to identify genes and proteins in mice that help or hinder the regenerative capacity of retinal ganglion cells. These neurons carry signals from the eye, through the optic nerve, and to the brain. Loss of these cells, due to diseases including glaucoma, causes irreversible vision loss. However, recent advances by Goldberg and others suggest therapeutic regeneration of retinal ganglion cells may be possible. Goldberg summarized his recent AGI work and highlighted recent progress in neuroregeneration of the visual system.
