The Vision Function Core (VFC) at the National Eye Institute (NEI), in Bethesda, Maryland, is recruiting a senior postdoctoral fellow that will enhance the facility’s research and service by investigating and discovering new tools and techniques for evaluating vision function in various live animal models. In particular, we are seeking a self-motivated candidate with strong interests in eye imaging and electrophysiology for translational applications in vision research.
The facility employs state-of-the-art imaging and physiological equipment including non-invasive electrophysiological recording setups, instruments for fundus and OCT eye imaging, and apparatus for visual behavior tests. Potential projects involve 1) using non-invasive techniques for evaluating the effects of novel interventions to stimulate translational research projects, including the creation of a suite of electrophysiological or imaging methods to generate quantitative outcomes that can report the effect of new drugs in animal models; 2) Creating new tools and techniques that allow for the correlation between clinical studies in humans to those in animals; and 3) Developing new techniques that can identify potential biomarkers to predict and /or correlate progress of retinal diseases. In addition, the candidate will also provide some core services to NEI intramural researchers and is encouraged to participate in collaborative research.
Successful candidates should have: 1) doctoral training in experimental (bench) research, preferably in vision research, neuroscience, or cell biology, 2) at least two years post-doctoral experience with a productive publication record in either electrophysiology study of visual system, eye imaging, or visual behavior testing, and 3) an interest in both basic and translational research in the vision sciences.
The position provides generous scientific resources and stipend support. Stipends are commensurate with research experience. Applicants must have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, and non-U.S. citizens are eligible to apply.
