Health Science Administrator/Scientific Review Officer

The mission of the National Eye Institute (NEI) is to eliminate vision loss and improve quality of life through vision research. NEI is seeking an exceptional candidate for a Scientific Review Officer (SROs) position in the Scientific Review Branch (SRB) of the Division of Extramural Activities (DEA). The SRB is in charge of peer review for a wide range of applications covering basic, translational, and clinical research as well as career development programs in vision science.

Major Duties: The successful candidate will have primary responsibility for organizing peer review meetings to review NEI grant applications. This involves recruiting and training reviewers, administrative review of applications, matching expertise of the reviewers with the applications, and ensuring that all NIH polices are implemented during the entire peer review process. At NEI the types of grant applications reviewed range from clinical trials to individual career development grants, so it is necessary to have a broad understanding of vision science/ophthalmology/optometry. In addition, we also review applications associated with the BRAIN Initiative as well as special initiatives developed by NEI.

In addition to organizing review meetings, responsibilities include helping other SROs by attending their review meeting and taking notes, keeping informed of all NIH policies related to peer review, and participating in committees within NEI and across NIH as a representative of NEI SRB. SROs also need to attend conferences to stay current on the state of the science and recruit potential reviewers. This position involves interaction with grantees, other SROs, reviewers, and NEI staff.

Candidate Qualifications: Applicants must be U.S. citizens. It is preferred that candidates hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent) in biomedical research and have professional experience conducting vision research. Strong organizational, oral, written and communication skills are required. Experience with grant review and/or portfolio management is preferable but not required.

Benefits
A full package of federal Civil Service benefits is available, including retirement, health and life insurance, long-term care insurance, leave, and a Thrift Savings Plan (401K equivalent). Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
