Forty-five summer interns and special volunteers participated in research opportunities at the NEI in the summer of 2012, working on a variety of different topics in ophthalmology and vision research. These students, from high schools and universities around the country, spent eight to twelve weeks working in labs across the NIH Campus in Bethesda, MD, and the NIH Twinbrook Campus in Rockville, MD.
NEI again welcomed students in the Diversity In Vision Research and Ophthalmology (DIVRO) summer program, an initiative sponsored by the NEI Office of the Director to increase the number of African-American, Latino, and Native American scientists in vision research by promoting career development opportunities for students interested in pursuing a scientific or medical career.
In addition to their time in the laboratory, students participated in a variety of activities sponsored by the NEI including the Summer Intern Journal Club on Topics in Vision Research and a visit to the NEI Eye Clinic. Additionally, interns had the opportunity in career development seminars organized by the NIH Office of Intramural Training and Education.
