Thirty-six summer interns worked in the labs and clinics of the NEI during the 2018 summer, conducting basic, translational, and clinical research. These students, from high schools and universities around the country, spent eight to twelve weeks working in labs across the NIH Campus in Bethesda, MD, and the NIH Twinbrook Campus in Rockville, MD.
The Diversity In Vision Research and Ophthalmology (DIVRO) summer program, sponsored by the NEI Office of the Director to promote research opportunities for students interested in pursuing a scientific or medical career, had another 12 participants interested in pursuing scientific or medical careers.
In addition to their scientific work, interns visited the NEI Eye Clinic and participated in the Summer Intern Journal Club on Topics in Vision Research, Responsible Conduct of Research training and Presentation coaching. Additionally, interns had the opportunity in career development workshops and scientific talks organized by the NIH Office of Intramural Training and Education.
