Jayakrishna Ambati, University of Virginia, and colleagues reported that genetic material called short interspersed nuclear element RNAs (SINE RNAs) send immune factors called NLRC4-NLRP3 inflammasomes into action and are elevated in both macular degeneration and lupus.

The researchers also identified an unknown receptor for the SINE RNAs called DDX17. The findings may help target the source of harmful inflammation in lupus, macular degeneration, and other diseases.
