Landmark Clinical Vision and Eye Research

Since 1968, NEI has supported cutting-edge eye health and vision research. In the early 1970s, NEI conducted one of the first randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in the field of ophthalmology. NEI continues to support such trials to provide the highest quality of evidence for clinical decision-making — and drive innovation and independent testing of therapies for eye diseases and conditions. NEI also supports natural history studies to understand eye diseases and their causes.

NEI-supported clinical research is essential for identifying new ways to prevent, test for, and treat eye diseases and conditions.
